Schengen visa bank statements: how much money and how to show it

“Insufficient means of subsistence” is one of the most common Schengen refusal grounds — and one of the most avoidable. The rules are public; the failures are almost always in presentation.

The number is per-country, not universal

Every Schengen state publishes a reference amount for daily means. As a broad guide, plan around €1,099 for stays of 9+ days or roughly €122 per day for shorter trips; France’s guideline is about €65/day with accommodation booked. The consulate of your main destination is the number that counts — check its page before you build your file.

What officers actually read in your statements

Not the closing balance — the story. Three to six months of statements showing salary arriving, normal spending, and a balance comfortably above the requirement reads as a stable life. A dormant account that suddenly received a large deposit a week before the application reads as borrowed money, and officers refuse on it daily.

The classic mistakes

• The last-minute top-up. If a large deposit is genuine (bonus, asset sale, family gift), attach proof of where it came from.
• Round-number theatre. Exactly €5,000.00 landing once looks staged; organic balances have texture.
• Ignoring the trip math. Ten nights in Paris on €400 total doesn’t compute, and officers do the arithmetic.
• Unexplained sponsors. Sponsorship is fine — undocumented sponsorship isn’t. Include the sponsor’s statements, income, and relationship proof.
