ETIAS 2026: what it is, who needs it, and when it really starts

If you can already travel to Europe without a visa, ETIAS is the one new thing you’ll have to do before you go — once it finally launches. Here’s the honest, current picture, without the fake urgency many sites are selling.

What ETIAS actually is

ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is an online pre-travel check for people who don’t need a Schengen visa. You fill in a short form, your passport is screened against security databases, and you get an authorisation linked to that passport. It is not a visa: it’s the European equivalent of the American ESTA. One approval covers 30 European countries for short stays.

Crucially: if your nationality currently needs a Schengen visa, ETIAS changes nothing for you — you keep applying for the visa as normal. ETIAS only adds a step for visa-free travellers.

The honest launch status

This is where most articles get it wrong. ETIAS has been announced, delayed, and re-announced for years. As of mid-2026 it has not started. The EU’s most recent public target was the last quarter of 2026, but that date was quietly removed from official pages, and current reporting points to 2027 as more likely.

So the honest answer to “do I need ETIAS for my trip this year?” is: probably not yet — but confirm on the official portal before you travel. When it does launch, there will be a transitional grace period before it becomes strictly mandatory.

What it costs and how long it lasts

• €20 per application (up from the originally planned €7).
• Free for travellers under 18 or over 70 — but they still need an approved authorisation.
• Valid for three years, or until your passport expires.
• Covers multiple trips within the standard 90-days-in-180 short-stay limit.

How to apply (when it opens)

Applying takes about 10 minutes on the official site: passport details, contact information, and some background questions. Most authorisations are expected to return quickly, but some can take up to 30 days if additional checks are triggered — so apply well before booking non-refundable travel.

There is exactly one official website: travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. Any site already “accepting ETIAS applications” or adding large service fees is not the EU. Don’t hand your passport data to lookalike portals.

• ETIAS — a light online authorisation for visa-exempt travellers to Europe (US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.).

If you’re a US, UK, Canadian or Australian citizen, you’ll likely deal with ETIAS for Europe and, for the UK, the UK ETA — not a visa.
