# Why Canada study permits get refused — and how to avoid it

Canada study-permit refusals have surged. The four grounds officers cite most — study plan, funds, ties, and documentation — and how to answer each one.

Canada has tightened study-permit decisions sharply — caps, Provincial Attestation Letters, and closer scrutiny mean refusal letters are common even for admitted students. The good news: refusals cluster into four predictable grounds.

## 1. “I am not satisfied you are a genuine student”

The study plan is the heart of the file. Officers refuse when the program doesn’t make sense for your trajectory: a step down from your existing degree, an unexplained career pivot, or a generic statement that never says _why this program, why Canada, why now_. Write a specific plan: the courses, how they build on your background, and the job title and employer type you’ll pursue **at home** afterwards.

## 2. Funds — amount, and source

You must show first-year tuition plus **CAD$20,635** living costs (single applicant) plus travel. Two failure modes:

- **Amount:** balances that technically hit the number with nothing to spare.
- **Source:** sudden deposits, untraceable sponsor money, or income that doesn’t plausibly produce the savings shown. Six months of history, income evidence, and — where available — a **GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate)** answer this cleanly.

Our [student funding guide](https://getvisaodds.com/guides/student-visa-funding) covers the documentation pattern in detail.

## 3. Ties and the “will you leave” question

A study permit is a temporary visa, so dual intent is examined: family, property, career prospects, and economic logic at home all count. Applicants from higher-refusal regions should treat this section as seriously as the study plan — the [strong ties guide](https://getvisaodds.com/guides/prove-strong-ties) applies fully.

## 4. Mechanics: PAL, documents, completeness

Since 2024, most applicants need a **Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter** with their acceptance; missing or mismatched PALs sink otherwise fine files. So do expired language tests, inconsistent forms, and unexplained gaps. Boring, checkable, fatal.

If you were already refused, get the officer’s notes (GCMS), fix the actual ground cited, and show what changed — the pattern in our [refusal recovery guide](https://getvisaodds.com/guides/after-a-visa-refusal).

## Frequently asked questions

What is the most common reason Canada study permits are refused?

The officer isn't satisfied you're a genuine student who will leave when required — usually because the study plan doesn't fit your background, funds aren't credibly sourced, or home ties look thin. Financial-source doubts are the other big cluster.

How much money do I need for a Canada study permit in 2026?

First-year tuition plus CAD$20,635 in living costs for a single applicant (IRCC's baseline, adjusted periodically), plus travel. The money must be genuinely yours or properly documented from a sponsor — a GIC is a strong way to prove it.

Should I explain a career change in my study plan?

Yes — directly. A program that pivots from your past work is refusable when unexplained, and persuasive when you show the logic: why this program, why Canada, and what specific role it leads to back home.
